This story began at GridLife Midwest where Vaughn Gittin Jr., Chelsea DeNofa and James Deane drifted around Gingerman Raceway in their Mustang RTR Spec 5-D’s.

First we need to introduce a couple of people into this story so you’ll know who we are referencing. Tom is the owner of the 2023 Mustang RTR Spec 5 and Jason is his son. Tom was in the market for a vehicle that had an emphasis on performance that could also be enjoyable to drive any day of the week. His son Jason has been a long time fan of Vaughn Gittin Jr. and what we are doing at RTR Vehicles, so he recommended a Mustang to be Tom’s new vehicle.

While at GridLife Midwest, they had the opportunity to chat with Vaughn and some of the RTR team members. After some conversation, Vaughn offered to have Tom’s Mustang picked up from his home in Michigan and brought back to the RTR Lab to be built into a Spec 5. Our rig made a stop at Tom’s house to load up his brand new Mustang with less than 100 miles on the odometer.

Building a Mustang RTR Spec 5 is no small task, there is roughly 60+ hours of work that goes into the build process of each Spec 5. When the Mustang arrived, it had 450 horsepower under the hood. The first item on the build list to be installed was the Ford Performance Supercharger system which increased horsepower output to, a ground pounding, 750 horsepower!

Moving on to the most time consuming portion of the Mustang RTR Spec 5 build process, the widebody fender flares! The entire Mustang was masked off and covered with blankets to protect it from the cutting and welding that has to take place in order to install the RTR Widebody Fender Flares.

Now it’s time for the cutting process to begin! The front and rear fenders have to be cut to fit the wider, forged Tech 7 RTR Wheels and Nitto Tires underneath the Mustang RTR Spec 5.

A steel filler plate is then welded into place only for the rear quarters. The filler plate fills the void where the rear quarter metal was removed to keep excess debris out.

The RTR Widebody Fender Flares are then fitted to the body. Holes are then drilled into the flares and chassis. Cleco pins are used to hold the flares in place to verify fitment.

The front and rear fenders are protected with an undercoating and all of the raw metal is protected with a corrosive resistant coating. Nutserts are then installed where the holes were drilled previously. The nutserts allow for hardware to be screwed in to secure the flares onto the body.

The RTR Widebody Flare process is now complete! The Mustang is put back on its stock wheels and ready for the next phase of its transformation into a Mustang RTR Spec 5!

The RTR Tactical Performance Suspension System went on first. This included RTR Lowering Springs, adjustable shocks / struts, front and rear adjustable sway bars. We also upgraded the front brakes with a set of Performance Package, 6-piston, Brembo Brake calipers and rotors.

While the remaining RTR components were being installed, the RTR Widebody Fender Flares were in the paint booth getting painted. A Performance Package rear spoiler was also being prepped and painted.

We replaced the factory Active Exhaust system with a MBRP 3-inch cat-back active exhaust system with carbon fiber tips.

All of the remaining RTR components such as the RTR Upper Griile w/ LED Accent Lights, RTR Lower Grille, RTR Chin Splitter, etc were installed before the widebody fender flares were installed.

The flares and rear spoiler have been painted and cured so it’s time to get those installed! The rear spoiler also gets the RTR Performance Package Gurney Flap.

The Mustang RTR Spec 5 is almost complete! RTR Graphics and mounting the Forged RTR Tech 7 wheels are all that remain. The matte black graphics pair perfectly with the vibrant Atlas Blue paint.

We have two RTR Forged Wheel options available on the Mustang RTR Spec 5. For this build, the Matte Black RTR Tech 7 wheels were chosen. The Tech 7’s are two-piece forged wheels that are 20x9.5 (-10) on the front & 20x11 (-16) on the rear.

Tom and his family decided to fly down from Michigan to take delivery of his new Mustang RTR Spec 5 at the RTR Lab. It was placed between Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s 10th Anniversary Mustang RTR Spec 5 and the RTR-X.

The fun isn’t over just yet! After the Spec 5 was unveiled the Dark Horse R reveal at Charlotte Motor Speedway was happening the same day they took delivery. Vaughn gave them a quick tour of the RTR Lab and everyone headed over to Charlotte Motor Speedway.

After the Dark Horse R reveal, everyone had the opportunity to get on track and do a parade lap around Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Tom was amazed at the entire experience as we exceeded his expectations. He was blown away at the transformation of his Mustang and how the entire experience was handled from start to finish. He is traditionally not a Ford person as he has several classic Mopars but we are happy to instill lifelong memories that Tom and his family will forever hold on to.
